• License

  You must have a valid saltwater fishing license from the Department of Fish and Game if you are 16 years or older.
   

• Size

  Clams must be at least 4.5 inches in diameter if found south of the San Luis Obispo–Monterey county boundary, or 5 inches if found north of that boundary. You must bring a RIGID measuring device, such as a caliper, to measure the clams.
   

• Quantity

  You can take up to 10 clams per person per day. Each person must have their own container and cannot combine clams with others.
   

• Hours

  You can only dig for clams between 30 minutes before sunrise and 30 minutes after sunset.
   

• Undersized clams

  You must immediately return undersized clams to the hole you dug them from, burying them at least two inches deep. Taking undersized clams home is illegal and harmful to the environment.
   

• Other

  You should not throw clams back into the ocean, as this can damage their shells and kill them.
